The City of Littleton is a home rule municipality located in the Denver Metropolitan Area of the State of Colorado. As of 2005, the city is estimated to have a total population of 40,396. Littleton is the 17th most populous city in the State of Colorado. It is the county seat of Arapahoe County, and portions of the city extend into Jefferson County and Douglas County.

Littleton became widely known in 1999 when the Columbine High School massacre occurred at nearby Columbine High School, which the media reported as being located in the city. The school is actually in unincorporated Jefferson County, but it has a Littleton postal address. The school is one of the schools of the Jefferson County school system and not one of the Littleton Public Schools.

The Colorado Center for the Blind, a skills training program for blind teenagers and adults operated by the National Federation of the Blind, is located in Littleton. The Denver Theological Seminary is also in Littleton.

In the DARPA Grand Challenge, a robot race in the Mojave Desert Intelligent Vehicle Safety Technologies’ “Desert Tortoise” hometown was Littleton. The city is also the site of the grave of Alferd Packer, one of the only two people ever imprisoned in the United States for cannibalism.
